Dyeing some more

This is how the day started

Locally the temperature dropped down to a minus figure overnight (first time this winter?) , but here we had a balmy plus 3 degrees with lovely sunshine all day – good enough to do some dyeing, albeit all in the microwave, nothing outside in that sunshine.

Then I tried a new dye which arrived in the mail this morning from Beautiful Silks in Melbourne, Victoria, along with a new supply of scarves.  This dye is very easy to use, 1ml liquid dye to 2g of fibre, it does mean that some small but very accurate scales are necessary.  Add dye and a splash of white vinegar to a litre of water, stir, then add fibre making sure that it is well covered by the dye.  Cook in microwave (not the kitchen one) for 7 or more minutes, depending on the amount of fibre and dye solution used.  The dyeing is finished when the water is clear and all colour has been absorbed into the fibre.

They will be rinsed out tomorrow and I’ll take some more photos.  I only bought one of each primary, and did a little mixing with them.  I’m keen to see what exciting things have happened.

This is how the day ended, a yellow full moon rising over the Channel, just a little south of where the sun rose this morning.
